Magical Herbs: Clove

The Nemeton

At this time of year, the clove gets used a lot in cooking. Like many, many other herbs in your spice cupboard, clove has magical properties as well as culinary.

The clove is also known as Syzygium aromaticum and the part of the plant that we utilize is actually a dried flower bud.

Clove’s magical powers involve love, protection, exorcism, and money.

Burning clove as an incense will drive away negative/hostile forces and purify an area as well as attract wealth, stop people from gossiping about you, and raise spiritual vibrations.

Carrying or wearing cloves (i.e. clove oil) will attract the opposite sex and can comfort the grieving.

Have you ever used clove in magical workings?

Devo Magix: A Sa for Protection

The Twisted Rope

The Sa was a commonly used amulet in the Middle Kingdom of ancient Egypt and literally represented “protection”. We’re not entirely sure what the Sa was exactly- some people think it was a life-preserver of sorts, others think that it was a rolled up herdsman’s shelter (Wilkinson, Reading Egyptian Art, 197). Regardless of what the Sa actually was, it became a symbol used largely for protective purposes- and that protection could range from childbirth to traveling and was often held by deities such as Tawaret and Bes.

For this project, we’re going to create a Sa out of fabric that you can use to protect yourself, your family, or whatever you want. The supplies you’ll need are:

  • Scissors
  • Fabric (I chose red)
  • Cordage or yarn in whatever color you’d like
  • Markers (I chose black)

Sa supplies

You will want to start by cutting your fabric into a rectangular shape. Make sure that…

What Planet Dominates You?

An Upturned Soul

Freddie_Mercury_by_skullFreddie Mercury by ~skull

As you may be able to tell from the image above… Mercury is the dominant planet of my natal chart. And it explains a lot about me. I am very Mercurial – subject to sudden or unpredictable changes of mood or mind. I could blame that trait on other planetary placements and aspects, but why bother when I can blame Mercury!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… even if repetition causes massive eye-rolling in me, mostly when others repeat themselves, because I give myself semi carte blanche for behaviour which annoys me in others but is cute when I do it… astrology gives awesome excuses for things which other systems don’t, and since quite a few people are frightened of astrology, astrological references send them running for cover and makes them forget they had demanded an explanation from you for why you did…

Star Goddesses of the Bible

Ostara, The Good

Last week, I was awakened at seven o’clock in the morning with the mists of a dream still swirling around my brain. And like a good mother I got up and instead of blogging like I wanted to, made some notes in my journal and took care of my kids. So now I finally have some time to get it all down.

I saw the Goddesses of the Bible sectioned into five categories that resembled the five pointed star, with a great circle around it called the Pentacle.  The Pentacle is a symbol of the covenant of faith in many spiritual paths but most notably in Wicca. It is an amulet used in magical evocation and is also used as a sigil of spiritual protection from negative energies. Much like the five pointed star of the policeman, it is a talisman of identity, and strength.
